"Shattered, abandoned, dead..."

These words by Hoffmann in Offenbach’s opera have become the title of the permanent exhibition of the Hungarian State Opera opened in the basement of the building. It commemorates 83 artists and employees who were dismissed and deported due to their descent during the Holocaust, and it reveals their fates from their dismissal from the Opera House to the labour service and the concentration camps. The exhibition is made special by the location: it takes place in a section of the basement-labyrinth of the Opera House, where our former colleagues hid and lived during the siege of Budapest.

The 45-minute guided tours are available in Hungarian and English. Group bookings are on request in case of at least 10 persons paying. Groups are limited to maximum 20 visitors.
