GEORG ZEPPENFELD
12 May 2025, 7 p.m.
In Brief
Song and aria recital in two parts, with Hungarian and English surtitles
German bass Georg Zeppenfeld originally trained as a music and German teacher, and only then began his singing studies. According to his own admission, it was not easy for him or his voice teacher, because the Westphalian dialect is not necessarily suitable for opera singing. However, their joint work proved successful, and Zeppenfeld now performs the most important roles. Beside German opera houses, he is a recurring guest on the stages of the most famous European ones – including Vienna, Stockholm, Prague, Milan, London, Paris, and Geneva – but he has also been a long-sought-after artist overseas – in San Francisco, New York, and Chicago. He is a regular performer at the prestigious Glyndebourne and Salzburg Festivals and has been singing Wagner bass roles at the Bayreuth Festival for a decade and a half. In addition to the works of the German composer, he is most often seen in Italian romantic works, primarily by Verdi, but his repertoire also includes operas by Mussorgsky, Dvořák, and Debussy. The singer has received numerous awards, most recently in 2022 for her performance of Gurnemanz in the Vienna State Opera's production of Parsifal, receiving the Austrian Musical Theatre Award. As a concert singer, he focuses on the great oratorios of Bach, Händel, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and he also regularly gives recitals. In the latter capacity, he will be making his Budapest debut at the Hungarian State Opera in the Stars’ recitals with piano series.
