Ferenc Anger started his studies in his home town of Szeged. While a member of the Hungarian State Opera's chorus, he completed his degree in theatre studies at the University of Theatre and Film Arts in a course led by Levente Osztovits, and then later studied theatre directing at Venice's IUAV. As a thesis production, he staged Verdi's Otello at the National Theatre of Szeged in 2008, with the title role twice being sung by José Cura. The Szeged theatre has been inviting him back regularly ever since: following on the heels of his productions of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Rossini's Le compte Ory, and Liszt's Don Sanche, ou Le château de l'amour, he staged Puccini's Tosca there in the spring of 2015. He has directed at the Müpa, the Margaret Island Open-air Stage, as well as in Pécs and Győr. He made his directing debut at the Hungarian State Opera with his 2013 production of Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos, which was followed in the 2014/15 season by Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress and Vivaldi's Farnace. In December of 2014 he staged two one-act operas in two Italian cities: Pisa and Chieti. In the 2015/2016 season the Opera played again Vivaldi's Farnace, and he directed Puccini's Il trittico at the Erkel Theatre in December 2015 and La traviata at the Margaret Island Open- air Stage in June of 2016, which is on the repertoire of the Opera House from the autumn of 2016. In 2016 he staged Poulenc's opera, Dialogues of the Carmelites. He received the Gold Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (civilian division) in 2017.
