Mátyás Antal (b. Budapest, 1945) graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy, Budapest as a choirmaster and a flute player, later he studied conducting at the Royal Music Academy of Brussels. For two decades, he was a flutist in the National Philharmonic Orchestra (formerly Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra), and at the same time started his career as a conductor. Over the years he worked with several renowned symphony orchestras in Hungary and held the position of associate conductor of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra as well as the Hungarian Radio Orchestra. Between 1984 and 2002, he led the Budapest Chorus, and from 1990 onwards he had been the chorusmaster of the National Chorus of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, till 2016, and start as a leading conductor of the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra in July 2018, it was finished in 2023.
Besides his engagements as a conductor, from the 1990s he has been a professor at the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy. As a conductor he has performed in several European countries, as well as Japan and China, and has made numerous LP and CD recordings produced by such labels as Hungaroton, Naxos, Portugalsom, CBS, Atemmusik Records and North/South Recordings.
In appreciation of his artistic achievements, he received the Liszt, the Bartók-Pásztory, and the Prima Awards. Awards. Additionally, the Hungarian government honoured Mátyás Antal by awarding him the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary (2005) and the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary (2015). He was also awarded with the Artisjus Award five times.
