Karl Haffner was a German dramatist. He started his studies in Königsberg, but later left to journey across Prussia, Saxony, Silesia, Austrian and Hungary as a travelling comic actor. Ten years later he became a successful playwright at the Pest Theatre, and from there he went on to sign with the Theater an der Wien and the Theater in der Josefstadt. He also wrote novels in addition to plays. The libretto for Die Fledermaus was co-written by Haffner and Richard Genée.
