Mezzo-soprano singer Andrea Edina Ulbrich graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in 1989, majoring as an opera and oratorio teacher. She participated in the master courses of Yevgeny Nesterenko and Szilvia Geszty and won the Grand Prix at the Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition, the Vienna International Music Competition, and the BEL CANTO Singing Competition in Brussels.
She is a regular guest at the Budapest Opera as well as at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf. She has been featured in the opera and concert performances of a number of international theatres: she sang in Mendelssohn’s Die Hochzeit des Camacho at the Theatre de La Monnaie in Brussels and at the Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerp, as well as in a concert production of Bizet’s Carmen at the Viennese Konzerthaus opposite Franco Bonisolli. In Frankfurt, she played Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the Unter den Linden and the Opern Frankfurt. The Opern Frankfurt also saw her perform in Wolfgang Rihm’s Lenz-Fragmente. In 2005, she sang the role of Adalgisa in Bellini’s Norma in Budapest. In Torino, she brought Verdi’s Amneris to life in Aida, directed by William Friedkin and conducted by Pinchas Steinberg. She then sang in Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux in Budapest, playing the role of Sara opposite Edita Gruberova. She first played the part of Azucena in Verdi’s Il trovatore in Triest in 2009, which she also performed at the Semperoper in Dresden with Fabio Luisi conducting, as well as at the Cologne Opera and the Tokyo NNT in 2011. She reprised the role with Marcelo Álvarez as her partner under the conductorship of Marco Armiliato and the direction of Franco Zeffirelli at the Verona Arena, where she sang the part of Fenena in Nabucco alongside Ambrogio Maestri on a number of occasions in the following years, as well as the part of Amneris in Aida , directed by De Bosio and conducted by Daniel Oren. She again played Azucena in 2012 at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse and at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, going on to perform Amneris at the Liceu Opera Barcelona. She reprised the role at the celebrations to commemorate the centenary of the Verona Arena, which performance was broadcast all over the world in 3D. In 2014, she debuted in her role as Herodias in Strauss’s Salome at the Budapest Opera, and as Gaea in 2005 in the performance of Strauss’s Daphne at Müpa Budapest, directed by Zoltán Kocsis. In 2016, she performed at the GOG season at the Carlo Felice Theatre in Genoa, accompanied by the Budapest Strings Chamber Orchestra. In 2017, she again performed in Budapest, singing Azucena in Il trovatore, Czipra in Strauss’s Der Zigeunerbaron, and the Princess in Suor Angelica, a part of the The Triptych. In 2018, she sang the main role of Hedwig in Offenbach’s Die Rheinnixen in a performance by the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest. In 2019, she performed with the accompaniment of the Scala Quartet at the Scala in Milan and at a gala concert at the Opéra de Nice.
