Rita Velich earned her diploma in stage and costume design from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 1993 as a student of Péter Makai and László Székely. For her thesis project, she designed the visuals for a production of the fairy-tale piece The Blue Bird, directed by Jánor Szikora. She has worked at a number of theatres both in Budapest (Madách Theatre, János Arany Theatre, New Theatre, Attila József Theatre, Jószsef Theatre, Hungarian State Opera, Budapest Operetta Theatre) and elsewhere in Hungary (Pécs, Kecskemét, Kaposvár, Zalaegerszeg). She has also collaborated on contemporary dance pieces with such renowned artists as Yvette Bozsik and Éva Magyar. Her first work in Classical ballet involved updating the costume designs from Tivadar Márk's 1953 production of Coppélia, which was being staged by Gyula Harangozó Jr. She has designed the costumes for several highly successful musicals (Lévay's Mozart and Elisabeth and Presgurvic's Roméo et Juliette), and also designed the costumes for the opera film of Bánk bán directed by Csaba Káel.
In recognition of her outstanding work in the theatre world, she was awarded the Mari Jászai Award in 2018.
